A new 3.5 ha residential area consisting of low energy houses is planned for the Pouttu region of Lapua. It will be stated in the zoning plans that the houses built in this residential area will have a maximum energy consumption of 40 kWh/m2/a. This is well bellow the current average for new houses in Finland. The current average for yearly energy consumption in newly constructed houses is 140 kWh/m2/a.
There are also plans to construct a small scale local district heating network. This district heating network will be based on a heat pump which uses the Lapua River sediment as a heat source (for heating) and heat sink (for cooling).
